The ire of the nation's matatu drivers at what they claim is near constant harassment and bribing by the transport police saw the nation's first major matatu strike in 7 years, officially called off, and yet empty the nation's streets of matatus virtually without exception. The close-down brought many businesses that had been expecting to open today to a standstill, while the commuters who did make it to work scrambled for the few buses, shared taxis and got rides in private cars, sometimes at high prices.
