Formally trained in Europe, Brooke returned to Africa in 1980 and has painted the country of his childhood ever since. His skill is evident in his disciplined approach to the application of paint. Minimal brushwork is employed to create maximum effect. Famous for his ‘Big skies’ this work is unusual for its lack of them, though the elephants are ‘pure Brooke’.
